You need to have an exact copy of the glasses prescription which you obtained from your optician when you had your eyes tested.

Please ensure the positive (+) and negative (-) signs are correct and in place.
If you are unsure about any of the information you have entered when ordering your spectacles you can contact us or send in a copy of your prescription and one of our dispensing opticians will verify the details.

Distance Glasses
From the above table you would input the prescription powers on the top row or where it says DISTANCE.

Reading Glasses
For reading glasses you can either type in the distance prescription and input the reading add in the box provided or if the optician has written the full prescription on the lower row that will suffice.

At first sight the prescription will be somewhat daunting as you will not understand the technical detail. We will endeavour now to clarify each section of your prescription.

SPHERE (Sph)
The spherical power determines whether you are short(-) or long(+) sighted.Short sighted normally means you can read close up but distant objects are blurred. Long sighted people can be blurred both close too and also in the distance. Opticians usually indicate negative values by putting a dash above the number.

CYLINDER (Cyl)
Sometimes but not always a second power, called The Cylinder Correction (Cyl) is needed. This corrects for astigmatism, which occurs when the cornea (the front lens of the eye) is rugby balled in shape.

AXIS
This is a number value between zero and 180, which determines the angle of the cylinder power. If there is a cylinder power in your prescription there must be an axis direction and vice versa.

READING ADD
This is an extra positive power which is added to the sphere power when you need intermediate or reading glasses. The reading add. It is usually written in the near part of the prescription (see above).

PUPIL DISTANCE
The pupil distance (PD) is the distance in millimetres from the centre of the right pupil to the centre of the left pupil. See our online measuring guide.

About your lenses   <back>

We will now explain the types of lenses available to you.

CR39 Plastic Lenses
These are our first choice standard lightweight lenses. They are virtually unbreakable and therefore safe.

HIGH INDEX LENSES
We offer 1.6 and 1.67 high index lenses, which will make your lenses thinner and lighter. These come as standard with an anti-reflection coating.

TINTS and COATINGS
We offer a range of coloured tints for fashion or sun spectacle purposes. Out transition lenses react to sunlight and have a 100% UV filter.

ANTI - REFLECTION COATINGS
These are used to reduce annoying reflection, such as headlamps when night driving. They are cosmetically appealing as people see you and not the reflection from the glasses.

Glossary   <back>

Anti-Reflection Coat
This coating reduces the effect of unsightly power rings and reflections which spoil the cosmetic appearance of the glasses lens .They are especially useful for night driving as they reduce the glare of oncoming headlights.

Bridge
This is the middle piece of the glassesframe which fits over the nose and holds the rims of the lens together.

Dioptre
This is the measurement of power of a spectacle lens.

Distance Glasses
These are glasses which correct the wearer’s distance vision.

Flexi-Joint Frame
These glasses frames have a flexi-sprung hinge side which helps to stop the sides breaking under stress.

Glazing
This is the process of grinding the lens to the shape of the glasses frame.

Hardcoat
This is a surface coating applied to the glasses lens to help prevent scratching.
It is not scratch proof.

Intermediate Vision
This is the focal range between distance and reading. An example of this is a computer screen

Lenses
The glasses lenses are glazed into the frame .These correct the vision of the customer. They are made from CR39 which is a plastic resin.

Memory Frames
These glasses frames retain their shape when flexed .They are virtually unbreakable.

Photochromic Lenses
These are lenses which darken when exposed to UV light. They lighten back to their original very light residual tint in approximately half an hour .You must not look at direct sunlight.

Prescription
This is a medical certificate issued by your ophthalmic optician, optometrist or medical ophthalmologist. It describes the powers needed to make up the glasses.

Pupillary Distance
This is the distance from the centre of the right pupil(black hole) to the centre of  the left pupil. It is often called the PD. Please see our online measuring guide.

Reading Glasses
These are glasses that are made with single vision lenses for close distances.

Sides
These are the 2 “Arms” of the glasses.

Supra Frame
This is a frame which has a nylon chord in replacement for the lower rim. These tend to be more comfortable to wear.

Thinner lenses
High Index lenses (1.6) give a thinner and lighter lens. The appearance from the side is also more cosmetically appealing.

Tinted
We tint lenses for cosmetic purpose, artificial lighting or for the sunlight. The lens is treated with a dye.

UV Light
UV or Ultra Violet Light is emitted from the sun. You can protect your eyes by having a UV coated lens or a Transition Lens. Please be advised not to look directly into sunlight.
